Group Captain Max Aitken, DSO, DFC: served as a Bristol Blenheim and then a Hawker Hurricane pilot with No. 601 Squadron Royal Air Force during the early part of World War Two becoming the squadron’s Commanding Officer in the June of 1940, earning him the Distinguished Service Order and Distinguished Flying Cross, for eight combat claims. He left the Squadron on the 20th of July 1940, he then served as the CO of Number 68 Squadron RAF, a night fighter unit, from February 1941 until January 1943, claiming four night victories. He then saw service in the Middle East during the middle part of the war years as Wing Commander, although he was now officially non-operational, he still managed to shoot down two Junkers Ju 52 aircraft whilst flying with 46 Squadron RAF in Beaufighters.Aitken became Wing Leader of the Banff Strike Wing with Coastal Command in 1944.
